No reason but watch of the day today happens to be my Russian early 20th century style Zlatoust Trench Watch or Wristlet.

  

Meant to represent pocket-to-wrist watch conversions; I have had it for close to 4 years already.

Of course, the pocket watch predates the wrist watch and was basically a man's watch while first wrist watches were strictly for the ladies.

An article not about the pocket watch per se but about the pocket watch too... and the wristwatch. And about how the pocket watch predated the wristwatch and was, like, a man's watch while wristwatches were strictly for ladies.

Clocks began to transform everyday life as early as the medieval period, when church bells sounded the hours, letting villagers know the pace of the day. But timekeeping began to weave itself into day-to-day life in an entirely new way as clocks became more omnipresent and portable. Affordable pocket watches weren’t common until the 19th century, but once they arrived, they quickly invaded the world of commerce. When you could time your actions with those of a remote trading partner, new styles of just-in-time commerce could emerge.

BBC News - A Watch for Blind People

A BBC website item on watches for the blind that sighted people are also buying apparently (link).

It is mainly about a wristwatch called The Bradley Timepiece.

But other watches for the blind are also mentioned.

Watches for blind (or partially sighted) people are of different types utilizing different principles to allow blind people to tell the time:

• Talking electronic watches
• Tactile watches -- both with hands that look more like regular watches with flipping glass crystals allowing people to feel the hands and the watch face which has raised hour markers and without hands like said Bradley Watch which uses a metal ball -- nothing particularly new though.
• Other.

Pobeda ZiM 2602 2000yrs of Christianity

Another little something from my collection. 

Meet a Pobeda ZiM 2602; this one is an anniversary piece celebrating the 2000 years of Christianity.

It has a nice cheery blue dial, says in Russian "2000 years of Christianity" and there is also on the dial the Grand Church of something or other, not being very religious I can't therefore tell with certainty though suspect it might be the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow (maybe not).

It is NOS and spends all its time in a little plastic box. I don't wear it, it is just a collection piece.

I like the gold-toned hour markers and also the fancy hour and minute hands, the tiny second hand is also there at 6 o'clock.

I must confess it took me some time to figure out in what year exactly we celebrated (or just marked) the 2000 years of Christianity. At first I couldn't get it but then.... it hit me.... answer after the jump.

Watch Crime: Florida-Crooks Take Off with High-End Watches

Florida, USA -- A report says a pair of thieves broke into a business over the weekend and made off with thousands of dollars worth of high-end goods, including luxury watches.

The business sells high-end purses and watches. Police said the store was targeted over the weekend, and it wasn't the first time. "This is the second time they hit the store, and we have always had surveillance video for this store, but unfortunately no one has come forward and identified these subjects. That is what we need the public to do at this time," said a Police detective.

The crime, which was caught on the surveillance video, shows the thieves approaching the business' rear door. Once up and close, they realize there is a camera, and they quickly adjust it. However, when they move the camera, you then see a clear view of the thieves' vehicle, which appears to be a silver Range Rover. "They move the camera, but when they move the camera they show their car, they show their faces," said the store owner, who did not want to give his name.

Police said the thieves were in the store for about a minute in a half but were still able to fill box after box with thousands of dollars worth of luxury goods.


The store owner hopes someone out in the community recognizes the crooks.
